Botswana has an obligation to support international efforts to combat money laundering, prevent, suppress and disrupt proliferation of weapons of mass destruction as well as the financing of terrorism.

The Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (“NBFIRA”) in conjunction with the Financial Intelligence Agency, hereby in accordance with section 6 (2) (d) of the Financial Intelligence Act of 2022 (“FI Act”) issues a guidance note on Detection of Covid-19 Related Crimes.

The guidance note contains a compilation of Covid-19 fraud related typologies and trends observed during the Covid-19 pandemic. NBFIRA through this guidance note anticipates a better understanding and improved reporting of suspicious transactions thereby promoting compliance.
